The Splendid Spotted Snake

This month has been all about learning colours and the kids as well as the teachers, have really enjoyed being able to come to school wearing their favourites! As we ended the month, we found a way to tie together all the colours the kids have been learning about, through a story one of our students Mother's showed us- the Splendid Spotted Snake. Its a sweet story about a Yellow Snake that begins to grow and as he grows, page over page through the appearance of a yellow ribbon that too grows, he develops new coloured spots; red, green, blue, purple, orange, black and white. Eventually, the spots become blended.

We invited Conan's mother, Joanna to not only come into the classroom to read the story, but to help with a craft wherein each child got to make their very own Splendid Spotted Snake. Everyone really enjoyed the activity!

Everyone listening closely and watching the ribbon snake grow!

Bubble Blowers!

One of the bins of toys that we’ve recently added in our classroom is bright builders. The kids love creating new and interesting things with them….flowers, ice cream cones, and most often, bubble blowers!! The kids have been busy making bubble blowers in all different sizes, shapes and colours One morning, one of the kids showed us how he made one like a bubble wand and pretended to blow a bubble. Since these creative bubble blowers did such a great job of filling the classroom with pretend bubbles, we thought we should see if they could make real bubbles too! The kids did a great job testing their bubble blowers out with the bubble solution!!

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is such a special part of who we are as people, living in a peaceful country like Canada.  We try every year to demonstrate its importance in a special way within the preschool curriculum. This year, we made poppies with our hands and read out a poem about the Poppy, seen below. Then we had a guest speaker, one of our student's parent's Erin Vollick, came in to share their family's story of their military background. We have posted a note below from Erin, which highlights her experience in the class with the kids!

Poppy
 -Anonymous

You are little, but not too small,

To remember soldiers who did fall.
Children you may do your part.
Love each other is how you start.
Play without fighting,
Share your games and toys.
Be kind and thoughtful,
To other girls and boys.
And once a year place a poppy on,
To keep their memory living strong.

November 11, 2012  Remembrance Day

Brynn’s Daddy, Mike, is in the Canadian Military, so Remembrance Day has always been a significant day for our family.  Since he was away, I thought I would go into Brynn’s class to talk to her friends about why it is such an important day for us.

I explained to the class that Brynn’s Daddy is in the army and he helps protect the “good guys” from the “bad guys”.  Remembrance Day is a day that was chosen a long time ago after some of our Great-Grandparents and Great-Great-Grandparents served in the First and Second World Wars.  It is a day that reminds all of us to remember the people who saved others from “bad guys” and made our country safe for us today.  As a result, we wear a poppy around this time of year as a symbol of our remembrance.  We wear the poppy over our hearts.

I then showed two pictures to the class of Brynn’s Daddy when he was in Afghanistan protecting “good guys” from “bad guys” there.  All the kids were very interested in these pictures and asked many questions, like why there was snow on the ground - though it was actually sand, about his helmet and uniform, etc.

I was very impressed at how well all the kids listened and paid attention to my little presentation and thanked them for allowing me to come in to talk to them.

October Highlights

This month we had a week of the Tiny Tumblers program – this is a program offered by the centre to get kids moving! We explored with hula hoops, danced with ribbons, created an obstacle course, jumped in potato sacks and so much more! Our month also included the use of the giant parachute. The kids LOVE when we have the parachute out! We put our Thanksgiving turkey on the parachute to see what he would do when we shake the parachute slow and fast…lo and behold, he dances! We also wanted to see if we could help him fly and touch the ceiling. As you can see from the kids faces, they are having a great time in the classroom and enjoying all the activities with their friends.
